Have you done a security assessment lately?Cyber that is. This week I had the joy of joining our Fayetteville Technical Community College students who are part of the Carolina Cyber Network’s Assessment Team working with the Mid-Carolina Council of Governments as they conducted an on-site cybersecurity assessment, putting their classroom learning into practice in this grant-funded partnership where the students earn as they learn.I learned so much listening to their questions, watching them methodically move from office to office and then gather to plan a follow-on inventory, presentation of their findings and training for the staff. It’s such an honor to work with these young leaders as they engage the Government & Military sector in this innovative workforce development project.#highered #cybersecurity #partnerships #earnandlearn #softskills #lifeskills #workforcedevelopment #great58

“…connection is what it’s all about. And connection sparks that hope. And hope saves lives.”I’m thankful that I have a handful of folks that reach out to connect with me, because they care. I’m also thankful that helping people connect is much of what I have the privilege of doing everyday in higher education and with my Soldiers in the Army Reserve.Where can you find caring folks with whom to connect? Everywhere. Work - school - faith community - sports teams - arts groups - community service organizations- online & in-person . Is it a risk to share life with others? Absolutely, but the reward is connection and hope. “Find a group of people who challenge and inspire you, spend a lot of time with them, and it will change your life forever.” - #CommunityWe all long for #community. I’m so thankful to have the word community in the name of the organization for which I work, Fayetteville Technical Community College, for that is what we build for our students, staff and neighbors. What a joy to see Sara Johnson Smith bringing together an amazingly diverse group of graphic design students assisting them in building and becoming community. In the room were High School Connections students, Traditional College students, Military Connected students, Neurodivergent students, alumni and more. It was a taste of what is so good about #Community college. It’s particularly important to me to see this #community being built because I was attending the meeting at the invitation of my son, a new high school connections student, a bit nervous to step into a room in which everyone else was older, but who so desperately wants to connect. I’m so thankful to have received the invitation and to have witnessed a little bit of “Heaven on earth.” I’ve seen the #community that this group creates literally save lives of young adults not sure if they mattered to anyone else. Thanks Sara and Doris Munoz, Ed.D. for making sure our students find #Community What group of people have become your community? If you don’t have such a group, please reach out to me - because there is a chair at the table for you.#highered #graphicdesign #belonging #connections #relationshipsmatter #notalone

#Convergence - when two things come together and Unite. Doesn’t that sound good? This week (and often) my civilian job at Fayetteville Technical Community College and my United States Army Reserve job #converged at Fort Liberty NC - and I want to celebrate.I went out to visit my FTCC staff, led by Martin Robinson, MA, as we began the semester. We celebrated as our military students streamed in for classes and others came to explore opportunities. Just two miles down the road I was able to celebrate at my own Army unit, Soldiers with whom I had gone to school - #Convergence.I had the privilege at our Headquarters U.S. Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command to host our Deputy Chief of Chaplains, US Army Reserve (and my friend and Officer Basic classmate) Chaplain (Brigadier General) Charles Causey and our US Army Reserve Command Chaplain (and friend) Chaplain (Colonel) Michael DuCharme and share with them the outstanding work of our 51 Unit Ministry Teams across the US and introduce them to our Chief of Staff. These gentlemen are some of the finest in our Army Chaplain Corps and it was an honor to sit alongside them. #ConvergenceWe’d never have dreamed in the Chaplain Officer Basic course, in 2002, that we’d go on to cross paths in Iraq, numerous places in the Continental US and now to have one of our own as a General Officer. #ConvergenceI am so very thankful that my civilian and military careers #Converge and each strengthens the other. Where have you witnessed the #Convergence of good things recently?

What important “first days” do you remember?Today was the first day of the 2024-25 academic year at Fayetteville Technical Community College and we welcomed bunches of active duty #military students and even more #Veterans and #militaryFamily members, many stepping on-campus or online for the first time as students. Stepping outside onto the sidewalks of our Fayetteville campus, it was easy to see the mix of excitement, anxiety, expectation and eagerness. New outfits, fresh haircuts, full-parking lots and hectic hallways announced the start of something big. What a joy to be a part of it.Community College is a cross-roads - and standing in the center of it is simply amazing. So many people, from ALL walks of life seeking to “upskill” so that they can engage life in new and meaningful ways in the workforce and world. 🌎 Some will go onto Universities and Grad Schools while others will go out into healthcare, public service, cybersecurity, automotive trades, HVAC, welding, business administration, graphic design, digital media…and more…and it all starts with their first day. (Doubly cool to have my soon start his first day of our High School Connections/ Early College today)First days are fun. Which do you remember?#highered #militarytransitions #veteranservices #communitycollege #Great58

Military Members, Veterans & their Families are MVPs.A little over a year ago our office “rebranded” to celebrate that fact. Fayetteville Technical Community College Military & Veterans Programs would be known as MVP acknowledging that those whom we serve are some of our Most Valuable Players / People and worthy of the highest caliber of service. It also acknowledges how I feel about my team - a group of MVPs - bringing their best to our students everyday. Pictured is one of our staff members, Brittany Loving, whose writing was just published in a collaborative collection, by the college. She’s an MVP.To bring MVP service to our MVPs we must partner with other high quality organizations, institutions and individuals. I had the privilege of taking school supplies, donated by FTCC colleagues, to the Fayetteville Vet Center this week and was wowed by their “It is the Veteran” print. They’ve partnered with Veterans Bridge Home to get the supplies into the hands of children who need them. These partnerships allow us to do so much more than we ever could alone. So thankful to work alongside a MVP Team serving MVP’s, everyday. Looking forward to a great 24-25 school year.
